Not too many UMak students, faculty and other personnel know that since the last quarter of 2017, Chinese language and cultural learning are being offered by the University. This is made possible through the University’s three-year partnership with Confucius Institute at University of the Philippine Diliman (CI-UPD) signed with the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM).

CI-UPD has agreed to collaborate in designing programs and activities that will provide Chinese language and culture learning, upgrade the quality of Chinese language instruction through immersion programs in China, capacity-building for teachers and students, and faculty scholarship grants in the Chinese language.  The ceremonial signing was held last January 23, 2018 at the Quezon Hall of UPD.

The University has accommodated two Chinese teachers, Ms. Jian “Joan” Ping Shao and Ms. Wenxia “Winnie” Zhang, who both handle the foreign language course of CTHM.  CI-UPD will provide library resources from the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), such as textbooks and reference materials to aid and supplement the teaching of the faculty and the learning of the students.

CI-UPD is a collaborative educational and service partnership between UPD and Xiamen University and the Confucius Institute Headquarters of China. The institute strives to provide Chinese language and culture learning, build local teachers’ capacity through professional Chinese language training, and facilitate a harmonious platform dialogue and exchange on various levels between the Republic and the Philippines and the People’s Republic of China.
